Visitor Hub Langley Vale Centenary Wood

RIBA competition entry for a  visitor hub in the Centenary Wood, commeorating 100 years since  the First World War

A massive, blackened wall creates a stark contrast within the setting of Lanley Vale Centenary Wood. Comprised of charred foraged timbers, the wall references both its woodland setting and the industrial scale of the destruction of war. Entering the hub through the polished aperture in the wall acts as a break in time along the path of the walker and, as the journey continues, the dedication monoliths to those lost in the war start to emerge.
